Recipient of two national awards, the Skoch Order of Merit the radio has also made a place for itself in the Limca Book of Records for receiving thehighest number of calls on its radio based consumer helpline. In its long journey, SMART has partnered a number of government departments, international agencies, multi lateral bodies, corporate and public sector organizations.

Besides running a radio station, SMART, is involved in raising awareness on the issues of education, women empowerment, health and sanitation, governance and strengthening of local elected bodies. It runs centers for mothers in the conflict areas of Assam, Kashmir and Jharkhand. These centers are premised on the assumption that mothers if socially and educationally empowered, can fight radicalism and prevent their children from going astray or joining terrorist organizations. This approach has yielded interesting outcomes in the areas wherever these centers have functioned in terms of raising the status of women within the community, affirmative action of mothers in keeping their children safe and away from radical ideologies, participation of women in decision making at home and at the community level and most of all inclusion of women in peace talks.   SMART is trying to enlarge the presence of mother's resource centers in other parts of the country.

SMART is deeply invested in the development of women and children and run education programs on its radio. It has helped give women a voice in an extremely backward, minority and marginalized area of Haryana.

Our Story

Radio Mewat, a SMART initiative, is a community radio station located in Mewat, an extremely backward district in the state of Haryana, India. Radio Mewat seeks to give voice to the voiceless in this backward community. Launched on September 1, 2010, the radio station started with just 2 hours of unstructured broadcast.

Absorbing the demands and expectations of the community, the radio stations now broadcasts 14 hours a day, covering a wide variety of local issues in its programming. It was not easy to set up a community radio station in a socially and educationally backward district like Mewat. Paucity of funds, trained manpower and dedicated power supply were not the only hurdles, there were far more complex social issues that we had to contend with. There were genuine fears of being rejected by an extremely conservative religious community. Our radio programmes were subjected to hard scrutiny by the elders and conscience keepers of the community to ensure that they did not threaten their beliefs.

What really worked in Radio Mewat's favour was the credibility of SMART and the work it had done in the last twelve years with women and children. Today the radio station has become not only the voice of the community but also it's pride and identity. The radio station has been the recipient of two national awards from the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. It won an award for being the 'Most Sustainable Community Radio Station' in 2011 and for the 'Most Creative and Innovative Programming' in 2012.

Mothers Support Group help women take charge of their lives.

Mothers Support Group is an attempt to engage with mothers. Build their capacity and skills, enhance their confidence and encourage them to take responsibility of the future of their children. MSG has boosted the confidence of the women, by making them recognize their inherent skills of multi tasking, love and patience, compassion, negotiation and dialogue. By training the mothers to fine tune their soft skills, SMART has successfully been able to involve the mothers to play more significant roles in dialogue and speaking up against violence to secure the lives of family.
